As Oro Valley, Arizona, approaches its 50th anniversary in April, one of the original town council members, Lauren Rhude, shares insights into the remarkable growth the town has witnessed over the past five decades.
Pioneering Oro Valley’s Incorporation
In 1974, Rhude, along with the initial town council, played a pivotal role in the official incorporation of Oro Valley on April 15. Recalling the challenges they faced during this period, Rhude highlights the significant opposition they encountered. Some residents were resistant to incorporation due to concerns related to land ownership and parcel sizes, leading to heated debates during council meetings.
Building the Foundation: Essential Services
In the subsequent four years, Rhude continued to serve on the town council, working towards establishing essential services that laid the foundation for Oro Valley’s development. During this time, his wife, Lila, served as the town clerk. Together, they played key roles in setting up crucial services, such as the Oro Valley Police Department, to meet the needs of the growing community.
From Tiny Town to Thriving Community
In the early days, Oro Valley had a modest population of around 1,800 people. Recognizing the need for improved law enforcement and other essential services, Rhude and his colleagues laid the groundwork for what Oro Valley has become today. From its ‘Tiny Town’ moniker, the population has surged to 48,000 people, as per U.S. Census data, showcasing the town’s impressive growth over the years.
Ongoing Growth and Future Aspirations
The steady growth Oro Valley has experienced since its inception has been a positive trend, and Rhude expresses his hope for its continuation. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining effective methods, rules, and regulations, he envisions a future where Oro Valley continues to provide freedom and quality of life for its residents.
Oro Valley’s Future Outlook
As Oro Valley celebrates its 50th anniversary, the focus remains on sustaining the town’s growth and preserving the principles that have contributed to its success. With an eye towards the future, the challenge lies in upholding the positive trajectory and ensuring that Oro Valley remains a vibrant and desirable community for years to come.
