A Philadelphia man has been handed a sentence of more than five years in prison for his involvement in a scheme centered on purchasing diesel gasoline using stolen credit card information. The case sheds light on the extent of the illegal activities and the dangers associated with firearms possession by felons.
Billy Carter Museum: A Unique Setting
In Plains, Georgia, an old Phillips 66 gas station has been transformed into a museum honoring Billy Carter, the brother of former US President Jimmy Carter. The station, now serving as a museum, offers visitors a glimpse into the life of Billy Carter, who was known for his colorful personality. The museum stands as a testament to the Carter family’s legacy in the small town of Plains.
The Diesel Gasoline Scheme
William Cole, 32, from Philadelphia, recently pleaded guilty to charges related to a scheme spanning from March 2021 to June 2023. Cole admitted to purchasing stolen credit card data and utilizing it to buy diesel fuel at Philadelphia-area gas stations. He then resold the fuel at a discounted rate, resulting in transactions totaling over $750,000.
Illegal Possession of Firearms
Federal investigators uncovered more than just financial crimes during a search of Cole’s home. Alongside the stolen credit card data, they found firearms, including a Smith and Wesson semi-automatic handgun loaded with over a dozen rounds. Additionally, a Glock 27 was discovered, modified with a conversion kit to enable fully automatic firing.
Previous Offenses
Cole’s case highlights a recurring issue with individuals who possess firearms illegally. He had prior charges in Pennsylvania related to gun and drug offenses and was legally barred from owning firearms. Despite this, he was found in possession of multiple firearms, underscoring the challenges law enforcement faces in enforcing firearm regulations.
In response to Cole’s sentencing, U.S. Attorney Romero emphasized the gravity of his actions, stating, Cole fueled his scheme using other people’s stolen information and armed himself with guns he knew he shouldn’t have. This sentence holds him accountable for both his financial and firearms offenses.
