A Phoenix police officer is recuperating in the hospital following a stabbing incident involving a suspect at a gas station in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sergeant Mayra Reeson reported that at around 1 a.m., authorities received a call from a security guard at a QuikTrip located near 19th Avenue and Bell Road, informing them of a trespasser on the premises. Upon arrival, the officer attempted to escort the individual off the premises. However, as the officer was leading the man out, he suddenly turned and stabbed the officer twice in the neck area, according to Reeson.

Swift Intervention and Subsequent Detainment

The attack prompted a quick response from a QT security guard who rushed to aid the injured officer. The guard successfully detained the suspect until additional officers arrived on the scene. The injured officer was promptly transported to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition, although he is expected to remain hospitalized for several days.

This incident marks the second assault on a Phoenix police officer within a short span. Previously, Officer Harold Boswell was shot multiple times in an ambush near 33rd and Southern avenues while responding to an attempted carjacking. All three suspects involved in that incident were swiftly apprehended within 72 hours.

Gratitude and Concern from Law Enforcement

Expressing gratitude for the officer’s expected recovery, Reeson emphasized the unacceptable nature of such violent attacks on law enforcement personnel. She commended the bravery of the QT officer and other individuals who intervened, despite sustaining injuries themselves.

Commander Matt Siekmann of the Black Mountain Precinct echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the potentially tragic outcome of the stabbing. He emphasized the intolerable level of violence exhibited towards the officer, underscoring the fortunate outcome of the situation.

Legal Ramifications for the Suspect

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect, currently hospitalized, will face multiple charges, including aggravated assault, upon his release. He will subsequently be booked into jail to await further legal proceedings.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty and the importance of swift intervention and support in such situations.
