As the temperatures rise and Memorial Day weekend approaches, the AMR River Rescue Team in Troutdale, Oregon, is gearing up to ensure the safety of water enthusiasts in Portland and surrounding areas.
Lifeguards Ready for Duty
The team, consisting of 23 lifeguards who are also trained emergency medical technicians (EMTs), is prepared to patrol popular swimming spots such as Glenn Otto and High Rocks Parks. These lifeguards undergo rigorous training, including a two-week academy, to ensure they are well-equipped to handle any emergencies that may arise.
Clara Dewitt, one of the lifeguards, expressed confidence and excitement for the upcoming season, emphasizing the importance of their role in keeping park visitors safe.
Decrease in Drowning Incidents
Zachary Green, the AMR River Rescue Program Coordinator, highlighted the positive impact of the AMR program in reducing drowning incidents at these parks. Historically, both Glenn Otto and High Rocks Parks had high rates of drowning incidents. However, since the implementation of the AMR program, there has been a significant decrease in these incidents.
Education and Prevention Efforts
In addition to providing active surveillance and rescue services, the lifeguards also focus on educating the public about water safety measures. Park guests are reminded to wear life jackets and swim with a buddy, especially in Oregon’s hazardous rivers.
Life Jacket Loaner Stations
To further promote water safety, AMR Southwest Washington and Safe Kids Clark County offer life jackets for loan at popular local waterways. These stations, located at Marine Park on the Columbia River, Klineline Pond in Salmon Creek, and Lewisville Regional Park outside of Battle Ground, aim to ensure that everyone has access to necessary safety equipment while enjoying the water.
Conclusion: Stay Safe This Memorial Day Weekend
As Memorial Day weekend approaches and temperatures rise, it’s essential for anyone planning to enjoy water activities to prioritize safety. Whether swimming, boating, or engaging in other water sports, always wear a life jacket, swim with a buddy, and stay informed about current water conditions. By following these simple precautions, everyone can have a fun and safe holiday weekend.
