INDIANAPOLIS, March 24, 2024 – Purdue’s Zach Edey made history with a remarkable 30-point, 20-rebound performance, leading the top-seeded Boilermakers to a decisive 78-50 victory over 16th-seeded Grambling State on Friday night. Edey’s stellar performance not only secured Purdue’s win but also marked the first 30-point, 20-rebound game in the NCAA Tournament since 1995.
Edey’s Record-Breaking Performance
In a display of dominance, Zach Edey showcased his prowess on both ends of the court, solidifying his status as one of the tournament’s standout players. Purdue’s Victory and Milestones
Alongside Edey’s historic performance, Braden Smith contributed 11 points and 10 assists, further bolstering Purdue’s success. The win not only advanced Purdue to the second round but also marked a significant milestone for the team, as they tied the school’s single-season record for victories with a season record of 30-4.
Redemption for Purdue
The victory over Grambling State signified a redemption of sorts for Purdue, erasing memories of their first-round exit in the previous year’s tournament. In 2023, Purdue suffered a shocking defeat to Fairleigh Dickinson, becoming only the second No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed in NCAA Tournament history. However, this year, Purdue left no doubt about their superiority, showcasing their dominance from start to finish.
The Road Ahead
With their first-round victory secured, Purdue now sets its sights on the next challenge. They await the winner of the matchup between eighth-seeded Utah State and ninth-seeded TCU in the second round, poised to continue their quest for NCAA Tournament success.
Grambling State’s Effort
Despite the loss, Grambling State displayed resilience throughout the game, led by Tra’Michael Moton with 21 points and Kintavious Dozier with 16 points. As the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament champions, Grambling State made their mark on the tournament, earning their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Dominance in the Heart of Indiana
Purdue’s commanding performance, fueled by Zach Edey’s historic achievement, reverberated through the halls of Indianapolis. With a sellout crowd rallying behind them just 60 miles from their campus, the Boilermakers left no doubt about their dominance on the court, setting the stage for a compelling journey in the NCAA Tournament.
