Long Beach Memorial Day Ceremony to Honor Fallen Military Members
Rocky Meredith’s battle with Crohn’s disease commenced at the age of 10, marking the beginning of a journey marked by hurdles and victories. Her resilience and the support of her loved ones have been instrumental in navigating the complexities of this chronic illness.
Early Signs and Diagnosis
Rocky’s vibrant childhood, filled with soccer games and carefree days, took a turn when she began experiencing symptoms like fatigue, reduced appetite, and abdominal pain around the age of 10. Recognizing the disruptive nature of these symptoms, she sought medical attention, leading to a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease.
Crohn’s disease, along with Ulcerative Colitis, falls under the category of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This condition involves the immune system attacking the body’s digestive system, leading to inflammation and sores in the intestines.
Compassionate Care and Treatment
Under the care of Dr. Barry Steinmetz, Medical Director of the Gastroenterology & Nutrition Center at MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, Rocky found solace and effective treatment. Dr. Steinmetz, a dedicated physician, prescribed STELARA®, a medication targeting inflammatory cells to alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
Rocky’s journey with Crohn’s disease has seen periods of remission, where symptoms are minimal or absent, demonstrating the effectiveness of proper management and medication in improving patients’ quality of life.
A Beacon of Resilience
Despite the challenges posed by her condition, Rocky has embraced her journey with courage and determination. Therapy and education about her illness have empowered her to take control of her health, while the unwavering support of her feline companions, Dandy and Felix, offers comfort during tough times.
Now 16 years old, Rocky serves as an inspiration within the IBD community, honored as this year’s hero at the 2024 Orange County Crohn’s & Colitis Take Steps walk. Her advocacy sheds light on the isolating nature of these diseases, encouraging others to face their challenges head-on.
Words of Encouragement
Looking ahead, Rocky shares words of wisdom for those battling Crohn’s disease, emphasizing the importance of resilience, letting go of control, and trusting the journey ahead. Despite the uncertainties, she remains steadfast in her belief that she will conquer her challenges and find peace.
