After over twenty years of operation, Rooster Teeth, the renowned Austin-based online studio, has announced its closure. The news came through a post on the studio’s website, where Rooster Teeth staff were informed during an all-hands meeting held on Wednesday, March 6.
Challenges in Digital Media Landscape
In a memo shared by Rooster Teeth General Manager Jordan Levin, it was revealed that despite continued investment from Warner Bros. Discovery, the studio is closing down due to challenges in the digital media landscape. These challenges stem from shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across various platforms, including advertising and patronage.
Future of The Roost Podcast Network and Red vs. Blue
Levin clarified that while Rooster Teeth is closing, The Roost podcast network remains unaffected and will continue operating. Additionally, the final season of the studio’s flagship series, Red vs. Blue, will soon conclude. Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring outside interest in acquiring The Roost podcast network.
Planning for the Future
As Rooster Teeth navigates through the closure process, Levin emphasized that the company is actively working on determining the next steps. Plans for franchises, shows, partnerships, and merchandise will be communicated internally and with the community on RoosterTeeth.com as more information becomes available.
From Garage to Industry Pioneer
Founded in 2003 in a garage in Buda, TX, Rooster Teeth gained rapid success with its action-comedy machinima series, Red vs. Blue, utilizing footage from the game Halo. Over the years, the studio expanded its portfolio to include games, films, podcasts, and live events like the annual RTX convention, leaving an indelible mark on the media industry.
Livestream Announcement
To provide further insights into the closure announcement, Rooster Teeth will host a livestream on its website on Thursday, March 7. This livestream aims to address questions from the community and shed light on the future plans of the studio.
