A recent study by Connecticut Trial Firm has ranked Nassau County as the fifth most dangerous beach in the U.S. based on rescue incidents per 100,000 people over the past decade.

Discrepancies in Rescue Data

The study indicates approximately 95 rescues per 100,000 individuals, totaling over 11,000 rescues since 2013. However, Lieutenant Haynes Cavender of Fernandina Beach Ocean Rescue disputes these findings, citing discrepancies with their records. Data utilized in the study was sourced from the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), which records around 600 rescues by Fernandina Beach Ocean Rescue during the same period.

Rescue Operations in Jacksonville Beach

Contrasting with Nassau County, Jacksonville Beach has witnessed a higher volume of rescues. Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue reports nearly 1,198 rescues since 2013, a figure exceeding the study’s estimates. Maxwell Ervanian, the Training and Operations Officer for Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue, notes that this year’s data is still pending, but there has been a steady influx of spring breakers.

Rise in Rip Current Rescues

Ervanian highlights a concerning trend of increased rip current rescues in recent years, often attributed to inadequate swimming skills and awareness among beachgoers. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing the dangers of the ocean, especially for those accustomed to swimming in controlled environments like pools.
