SAN ANTONIO – A recent security audit of downtown San Antonio has recommended the establishment of a comprehensive surveillance network, leveraging real-time footage from businesses and city cameras to enhance public safety and security. Commissioned by Centro San Antonio and conducted by Tomahawk Solutions based in Nashville, the audit aims to address ongoing concerns related to crime, vandalism, and safety in the downtown area.
Current Challenges and Proposed Solutions
Centro CEO Trish DeBerry highlighted the fragmented nature of existing surveillance systems in downtown San Antonio, emphasizing the lack of coordination among various camera setups. Currently, we do have some cameras, but it’s kind of a hodgepodge, DeBerry stated. The audit’s top recommendation is the creation of a unified network that integrates surveillance footage from all downtown establishments and city-operated cameras.
Stakeholder Support and Community Impact
Business owners and stakeholders in downtown San Antonio have expressed strong support for the proposed initiative. Scott Becker, general manager of Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood, described the proposal as forward-thinking, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe environment for the millions of visitors who frequent the area annually. The initiative aims to foster a more secure environment conducive to business and leisure activities alike.
Moving Forward: Pilot Programs and Implementation
DeBerry indicated that Centro has already engaged in discussions with city officials to explore the feasibility of implementing pilot programs based on the audit’s findings. The initial focus would be on identifying high-crime areas in downtown San Antonio and establishing a pilot surveillance network to assess its effectiveness in crime prevention and public safety enhancement.
We would look at the data, find an artery in downtown where there are a lot of calls that are made by police, and then we would set up a camera network there and let’s pilot the program, DeBerry explained. While specific timelines for implementation have not yet been set, Centro is committed to progressing towards a more cohesive security strategy for downtown San Antonio.
Conclusion: Enhancing Safety for All
The proposed comprehensive surveillance network represents a proactive approach by Centro San Antonio and city stakeholders to address public safety concerns in downtown San Antonio. By leveraging modern technology and coordinated efforts, the initiative aims to create a safer and more secure environment, ultimately benefiting residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
