Selma, Calif. (KMPH) – The tight-knit community of Selma, California, has once again showcased its unwavering support for its members, rallying around the Sesate family after a harrowing incident. On April 16th, during a Junior Varsity baseball game between Selma High and Reedley High, Chris Sesate, a father in attendance, experienced a sudden heart attack, sending shockwaves through those present.

Swift Response and Heroic Efforts

Fellow Selma JV Baseball father, Lalo Tovar, and others, including an off-duty Fresno firefighter, sprang into action, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and quick thinking in administering life-saving aid. Tovar, drawing on his 23 years of experience as a cardiovascular technician, immediately recognized the gravity of the situation as Sesate ceased breathing. Without hesitation, he initiated CPR, ensuring vital circulation while awaiting further medical assistance. Sesate was subsequently shocked with a defibrillator before being swiftly transported to Adventist Hospital in Reedley and later to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he underwent critical open-heart surgery.

Community Solidarity and Support

As Chris Sesate continues his journey to recovery, the Selma High Baseball Dugout Booster Club and the Selma High Softball Diamond Club have exemplified the spirit of community by extending heartfelt support to the Sesate family during this challenging time. Treasurer of the Selma High Baseball Dugout Booster Club, Natalie Castro, emphasized the community’s unity and mutual assistance, stating, We all help each other. We stick together.

Fundraising Efforts and Messages of Encouragement

In a touching display of solidarity, dozens of individuals congregated outside Pelican’s Snoballs in Selma, where the establishment generously pledged 20% of its proceeds to aid the Sesate family. Additionally, a prominent card adorned with messages of encouragement served as a tangible expression of the community’s collective well-wishes.

Reflecting on the incident and the subsequent outpouring of support, Lalo Tovar expressed profound gratitude for Sesate’s survival, underscoring the enduring bond between lifelong friends and neighbors. Tovar shared, He says he owes me one. I’m like, ‘You don’t owe me anything.’ I just want him to be here to watch his son. I would love to have him back. I’ve known him since we were kids. I’m glad he’s still with us.
