Severe storms wreaked havoc in Grain Valley, Missouri, on Monday night, with strong winds and possible tornadoes leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

Surveying the Damage

The National Weather Service (NWS) dispatched crews from Pleasant Hill to assess the aftermath of the storm. One area of focus was Southwest Eagles Parkway, where the wind damaged a ten-meter tall power pole, now under inspection by Evergy.

Roofs were torn off buildings on both sides of the street, showcasing the sheer force of the storm’s winds.

Tornado Confirmation

According to the NWS, a line of severe thunderstorms, with embedded mesovortex circulations, swept through the Kansas City metro area, resulting in two confirmed tornadoes. The first tornado hit northeastern Platte County around 11 p.m., followed by another that started in southern Blue Springs and ended in Grain Valley in Jackson County at approximately 11:30 p.m.

The NWS classified the tornadoes as an EF-0, with estimated 80 mph winds in northeastern Platte County, and an EF-1, with estimated 100 mph winds from Blue Springs to Grain Valley.

Trail of Destruction

In the aftermath of the storm, scenes of devastation were evident. At Trailside RV, an overturned trailer lay near Interstate 70, while other RVs were pushed against fencing. Additionally, a part of a roof was ripped off a preschool further east along the storm’s path.

Meteorologists on the Scene

Melissa Kreller, the meteorologist in charge for the NWS in Pleasant Hill, led the team assessing the damage and confirming tornado activity.

Ryan Cutter, a meteorologist for the NWS, highlighted the significant damage to the power pole, indicating possible tornado activity.

Kreller emphasized the importance of identifying damage indicators to determine the severity and path of the storm.
