Greenbelt, Md. – Five juveniles are hospitalized following a shootout at a senior skip day gathering near a recreational center in Greenbelt, Md. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, according to the Greenbelt Police Department.
Chaotic Scene Unfolds
Authorities responded to Schrom Hills Park around 3 p.m., where approximately 500 to 600 high school students aged 16 to 18 had congregated. As officers attempted to control the crowd, they heard gunshots nearby. Rushing to the source of the gunfire, they discovered five individuals wounded. All victims were transported to hospitals, with one in critical condition.
Police Chief’s Response
Greenbelt Police Department Police Chief Richard Bowers denounced the incident as horrible, tragic, senseless. He emphasized the need for societal action to prevent such occurrences, expressing frustration at the violence disrupting what should have been an enjoyable occasion for the students.
Search for Suspect
Despite efforts to locate the gunman, the chaos caused the group to scatter onto Hanover Parkway, potentially aiding the suspect’s escape. The unauthorized gathering, organized via social media for senior skip day festivities, involved students from multiple schools, though the exact number remains unknown.

Following the shooting, nearby schools and recreational facilities were placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, confirmed Greenbelt Mayor Emmett Jordan.
