Colorado Springs Utilities (Springs Utilities) is urging residents to adjust their outdoor watering schedules as the warmer months approach. Starting from May 1st, it’s recommended to water lawns before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to minimize water loss due to evaporation.
Water-Wise Practices
According to Springs Utilities, running sprinklers during the heat of the day can lead to significant water loss through evaporation. Adhering to the suggested watering schedule can help mitigate this loss. Residents are advised to water lawns up to three days a week, adjusting the frequency based on monthly recommendations.
Seasonal Guidelines
These watering guidelines will be effective until October 15th, after which residents should reduce watering to twice a month during warm days. Springs Utilities emphasizes that these measures aim to prevent unnecessary water loss in the community while promoting healthy landscapes in the semi-arid region, optimizing water usage.
Year-Round Rules
In addition to seasonal adjustments, Springs Utilities emphasizes several year-round rules to promote water conservation:
- Prevent Water Pooling: Avoid allowing water to accumulate on hard surfaces or flow down gutters.
- Repair Sprinkler Leaks: Any leaking sprinkler systems should be repaired within 10 days to prevent water waste.
- Use Shut-Off Nozzles: When using a hose, utilize a shut-off nozzle to conserve water.
- Limit Surface Cleaning: Clean hard surfaces such as driveways and sidewalks with water only when necessary for public health and safety concerns.
Supporting Conservation Efforts
Springs Utilities stresses the importance of these water-wise practices in conserving water resources and maintaining a sustainable environment in the Colorado Springs area. By adhering to these guidelines, residents can contribute to the preservation of water while ensuring the health of their landscapes.
