The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts a short-lived bout of predominantly light precipitation, spanning approximately three hours, with most areas receiving less than a tenth of an inch on Thursday evening.

Cold Front and Snowfall Predictions

Anticipate a cold front accompanied by low-elevation snow, showers, and even the potential for thunderstorms by Friday afternoon. Forecasters are particularly emphasizing the significance of snowfall, indicating that this system may bring the season’s lowest snow levels. Snow levels are projected to commence at 5,000 feet on Thursday afternoon before plummeting to 3,000 feet later in the evening, persisting at that level through Friday. In some convective bursts, snow could descend as low as 2,500 feet.

Rainfall Estimates and Wind Conditions

While overall rainfall amounts are expected to remain relatively low, with most regions receiving less than half an inch, certain mountainous areas might see up to an inch, especially where thunderstorms are likely to develop, notably in the Antelope Valley. Additionally, gusty winds are forecasted to intensify from Thursday afternoon, persisting through Friday night, with the strongest gusts anticipated near the desert slopes of the mountains and along the coast.

A winter storm warning will be effective until 11 p.m. Friday for the San Gabriel Mountains and the Antelope Valley Freeway corridor. Predictions include the potential for up to 10 inches of snow above 6,000 feet, three to six inches as low as 5,000 feet, and three inches at 3,000 feet, accompanied by winds gusting up to 45 mph. Conversely, a less severe winter weather advisory will be in effect for the Antelope Valley foothills and the 5 Freeway corridor, where up to 3 inches of snowfall is anticipated.

Clearing Conditions and Temperature Outlook

The inclement weather is expected to gradually taper off by Friday evening, with dry weather anticipated by Saturday morning. Temperature-wise, Friday will see highs primarily in the 40s to 50s for coastal areas, valleys, and desert regions, while mountainous areas will experience temperatures ranging from the mid-20s to 30s.
