A teenager with a history of brushes with the law is being sought by authorities in connection with the shooting death of a Georgia man in Columbus over the weekend. Jaquan Curry, 19, is wanted for the homicide of Ronald Diggs, who was killed on April 29 outside a Waffle House on North High Street near Ohio State’s campus. Three other individuals are also being sought by police in connection with the investigation into Diggs’ death.

Prior Run-In with the Law

Curry’s involvement in the recent shooting is not his first encounter with law enforcement. According to records from the Franklin County Municipal Court, Curry faced charges for using weapons while intoxicated in 2022, when he was found under the influence of alcohol with a firearm in a second-floor landing of an apartment complex. The incident occurred during an argument between two men, prompting police response to reports of gunfire.

Participation in Gun Safety Program

Instead of facing a fine for the misdemeanor offense, Curry was given the opportunity to participate in a gun safety pilot program facilitated by the Columbus City Attorney’s Office. This program, designed for individuals with non-violent misdemeanors, required Curry to surrender his weapon for destruction and attend gun safety classes to gain knowledge about firearm safety. After successfully completing the six-month program in August 2023, Curry’s case was dismissed.

City Attorney Zach Klein emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, Some people continue to make bad decisions, this person clearly did. He needs to be held accountable for it.

History of Violence

Curry’s involvement with violence stretches back to his teenage years. At the age of 15, he was reportedly wounded during a double-shooting incident in northeast Columbus, although his injuries were not severe.
