In the heart of the Amphi neighborhood, the Amphi Panteras Tenant Empowerment Program is making strides to advocate for tenants’ rights in Tucson. Hassan Clemment, a key player in this initiative, collaborated with organizations like Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Ward 3, and Tucson Tenants Union to address the challenges faced by tenants in their apartment complexes.

Grassroots Efforts to Address Tenant Issues

Since August of the previous year, Clemment and his team have been actively engaged in canvassing neighborhoods, aiming to raise awareness about tenants’ rights and provide support to those facing issues with their living conditions. The program was born out of Clemment’s personal struggles with his apartment and the lack of assistance from his landlords.

Missy Arroyo, a single mother residing in the Malibu Apartments, found support through the program after living with mold, exposed wires, and no AC throughout a scorching summer. Clemment’s intervention, including calls to code enforcement and property managers, resulted in tangible solutions for Arroyo’s housing challenges.

Building Alliances to Tackle Housing Issues

The collaboration expanded when Lexi Dunson, a resident of Riverwalk Luxury Apartments, joined forces with Clemment and Arroyo. Dunson’s unit faced issues with roaches and mold, and despite repeated attempts to address the problems with the property management, she found herself living in undesirable conditions.

The trio embarked on a joint effort, canvassing Dunson’s apartment complex and reaching out to others facing similar challenges. Their mission involved providing resources and support to those in need. Dunson expressed gratitude for the newfound solidarity, emphasizing how the support from the group made her feel backed in her struggle against Scotia Group Management, the property management company for Riverwalk.

A Unified Front Against Unresponsive Property Managers

Dunson’s battle against Scotia Group Management is now in the courtroom, with ongoing updates expected. Despite the uncertainties, she remains determined to move out and continue advocating for tenants’ rights. Her vision extends beyond her immediate situation, aiming to identify and challenge what she refers to as “slumlords” and advocating for legislative changes.

Conclusion: Empowering Tenants Beyond Borders

The Amphi Panteras Tenant Empowerment Program exemplifies the power of grassroots initiatives in addressing tenants’ rights. By forming alliances, raising awareness, and providing support, the program not only tackles immediate housing issues but also fosters a community-driven movement for broader change in housing regulations and landlord accountability. As the fight against unresponsive property managers continues, these individuals remain steadfast in their commitment to empower tenants and effect lasting change.
