Madison County, NC – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office apprehended three individuals accused of a string of burglaries that targeted local communities over the past several weeks. Sheriff Buddy Harwood reported that the suspects had rented an Airbnb in Barnardsville, using it as a base for their alleged criminal activities.

Crime Spree Uncovered

Sheriff Harwood detailed that the spree involved more than 48 incidents of breaking and entering across the county, affecting cars and outbuildings. Detectives, after reviewing surveillance videos, focused their efforts on late-night patrols, ultimately identifying and tracking down the suspects in Mars Hill.

Stolen Firearm Recovered

During the arrest, law enforcement recovered a stolen firearm from Kentucky in the suspects’ vehicle. Sheriff Harwood emphasized that the trio targeted items like hand tools, easily transportable and quickly sellable.

Origin and Impact

The suspects, originally from Elizabethton, Tennessee, are also suspected in similar crimes in Tennessee. The oldest suspect, 39-year-old Kevin Craig, has a criminal record, though Sheriff Harwood indicated uncertainty about their relationship.

Sheriff Harwood expressed concerns about the misuse of Airbnb properties for criminal activities, describing them as convenient hideouts for short-term criminals.
