A baby zebra named Tikiti Maji tragically lost its life on Tuesday at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona. The unfortunate incident occurred when Tikiti, alongside its mother Anna, became startled by a gust of wind as a storm approached. According to Director of Animal Care Adam Ramsey, Anna stopped abruptly before reaching a fence, but Tikiti, in a panicked state, continued running and collided with the barrier. The impact resulted in fatal injuries to Tikiti’s neck.

Frequency of Such Incidents

Ramsey mentioned that similar occurrences have been documented in zoos across the nation, underscoring the danger posed to young zebras. He pointed out that such accidents represent one of the leading causes of death for zebras under one year old. Sadly, this marks the third time such a tragedy has unfolded at Reid Park Zoo since 2014.

Zoo Response and Changes

In response to a similar event in 2020, where a male foal met a similar fate, Ramsey highlighted the significant alterations made to the zebra habitat at the zoo. These modifications were intended to enhance the safety of the animals. Despite these efforts, the recent incident prompted further adjustments, including the addition of additional wood paneling to reinforce the enclosure walls.

Zebras, particularly the Grevy species, are classified as endangered. Consequently, they are part of the Grevy Species Survival Plan, emphasizing the importance of protecting and preserving these animals.
