The trial for Emonte Morgan, the man accused of fatally shooting Chicago Police Officer Ella French, is set to commence this week, with jury selection starting on Monday. Morgan faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder of a peace officer, and possession/use of a firearm as a felon.
Incident Recap
On August 7, 2021, French and two other officers stopped Emonte and his brother, Eric, for having expired plates near the intersection of 63rd Street and Bell Avenue. According to prosecutors, a confrontation ensued when Emonte Morgan refused to comply with police orders to put down a drink and cellphone he was holding. During the altercation, Emonte began shooting, injuring French and her partner, Officer Carlos Yanez Jr. French, aged 29, tragically succumbed to her injuries at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
Legal Proceedings
Eric Morgan, Emonte’s brother, pleaded guilty in Cook County court last October to unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated battery, and obstruction of justice. As part of the plea agreement, he will receive a maximum sentence of seven years for the weapons charge, to be served concurrently with five- and three-year sentences for the other charges.
Gun Source Sentencing
Jamel Danzy, identified as the “straw purchaser” of the firearm used in the shooting, received a 30-month prison sentence from a federal judge in December 2022.
