The trial for the man accused of killing his cousin, Downing McLean, is set to commence on Tuesday morning in Norfolk, Virginia.
Charged with First-Degree Murder
Cola Beale IV faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his cousin, Downing McLean. If found guilty, Beale could potentially face up to 40 years in prison. The trial is slated to commence at 9:30 a.m.
Tragic Circumstances
On March 28, 2022, Norfolk Police discovered 30-year-old McLean deceased inside a residence on Sewells Point Road. McLean had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, according to authorities.
Family Tragedy Unfolds
In a harrowing series of events, Beale’s alleged crimes extended beyond the death of his cousin. Just days before McLean’s tragic demise, Beale was implicated in the shooting death of his girlfriend, 31-year-old Czavi’er Hill, in Virginia Beach. Beale reportedly set her home ablaze with Hill and her dog inside. Additionally, Beale’s father figure, 73-year-old Clifton Baxter, was later found deceased from a gunshot wound.
Confessions and Convictions
In April 2022, during a jailhouse interview, Beale confessed to the murders, displaying a lack of remorse for his actions. However, justice prevailed on March 20, 2024, when a Virginia Beach jury found Beale guilty on multiple counts, including aggravated murder, arson, abduction, animal cruelty resulting in death, and gun charges. The jury, comprised of six women and six men, deliberated for approximately an hour before reaching their verdict.
Seeking Redemption
Following the verdict, Beale expressed remorse in a subsequent interview, acknowledging the gravity of his actions. He conveyed an apology, albeit recognizing its insufficiency in light of the devastation caused by his crimes. Beale awaits sentencing for the Virginia Beach murders, scheduled for July 2.
