TUCSON, Ariz. – Emma Plummer, a local cottage baker, has emerged as a prominent figure in the Tucson sourdough bread scene, marking a significant shift in her culinary pursuits. Unconventional Inspiration
Plummer’s journey into the world of sourdough breadmaking took an unexpected turn, spurred by a life-altering event. In November 2021, while pregnant with her second child, she contracted COVID-19, resulting in a prolonged hospitalization that lasted three months. The illness not only posed a significant threat to her health but also posed challenges to her physical well-being, including the loss of half of her right lung and dependence on a ventilator.
A New Beginning
During her hospitalization, Plummer received a sourdough starter kit from a friend, igniting her imagination and desire to return to her baking passion. Despite the adversity she faced, her determination remained unwavering. Upon her discharge in February 2022, Plummer wasted no time incorporating sourdough bread into the Butter+Whisk menu, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her culinary endeavors.
Nurturing Success Amidst Adversity
Despite the challenges of balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, Plummer found solace and support in her family, particularly her husband and two young children.
