If you’re a frequent traveler on North First Avenue in Tucson, you’ve likely formed opinions about the road and its conditions. The City of Tucson is actively seeking public input on potential changes to North First Avenue between Grant and River, acknowledging that the daily experiences of drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists are closely tied to their overall quality of life.

Current Challenges and Risks

Observations reveal heavy traffic and risky pedestrian behaviors along North First Avenue, particularly between Grant and River. Ward 3 Council Member Kevin Dahl emphasizes the severity of the situation, describing it as a deadly street. Over a four-year period, there were 800 crashes and 12 fatalities, leading to a decision to scale back the road from six lanes to its current four lanes. Dahl points out that this change is not only beneficial for businesses, causing less disruption, but also includes safety improvements.

City’s Approach and Public Engagement

Despite the decision against widening the road due to traffic considerations, the City of Tucson and RTA (Regional Transportation Authority) are keen on incorporating public opinions into other aspects of the design. The city invites the public to provide comments, but there’s also an opportunity for deeper involvement. They are seeking 15 individuals to join a planning task force for North First Avenue.

Task Force Criteria

To be eligible for the task force, applicants should fulfill one of the following criteria:

  • Live near First Avenue
  • Own a business or property along First
  • Use First for Daily Trips
  • Walk, bike, or take buses along First

How to Get Involved

Members of the public interested in joining the planning task force can apply through the Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility website. Applications will be accepted until the end of the month.

Public Perspectives

In gathering opinions, we spoke to some drivers for their insights. Troy Heffernan advocates for widening the road, particularly during rush hour, to alleviate congestion and enhance overall safety. On the other hand, Eric Becerra suggests adding crosswalks to address the recent surge in pedestrian accidents.

Shaping the Future of North First Avenue

As the City of Tucson actively engages with the public to improve North First Avenue, the collective input of residents, businesses, and daily commuters will play a crucial role in shaping the road’s future. The task force initiative and the open call for comments reflect a commitment to inclusivity and safety, aiming to create a road that aligns with the needs and preferences of the community.
