Amid the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, many businesses faced the need for drastic changes to survive. In Tucson, one business not only adapted but found unprecedented success by transitioning into the realm of online auctions.

From Soundstage to Online Auction House: A Drastic Pivot

Laura Levin, the owner of Factor48.com, initially built the business as the largest soundstage in Arizona. However, the impact of Covid-19 forced a radical shift in strategy. Moving into a spacious 60,000 square foot warehouse near downtown, Levin redirected her focus from film production to the lucrative world of online auctions.

Reflecting on this pivotal decision, Levin mentioned, “We had started doing some online auctions to sell some livestock at the Pima County Fair and really realized that online auctions are a great way to sell items.”

Factor48.com’s Meteoric Rise: Auctioning Across Borders

In just a few years, Factor48.com has emerged as a prominent player in the online auction scene. Bids are pouring in not only from different states within the U.S. but also from international bidders. Levin, along with her six employees, is currently overseeing the auction of an extensive collection from Retro Toys and More, a local toy store that closed due to the owner’s passing.

Levin noted, “Tens of thousands of toys” are being auctioned off, and the process involves meticulous sorting and packing.

The Hot Picks: Barbie, G.I. Joes, and Retro Game Consoles

Factor48.com has identified specific trends in the toy market, with certain items garnering considerable attention. The recent popularity of the Barbie movie has spiked interest in vintage Barbie items, such as the 1960s Barbie kitchen set. Additionally, G.I. Joes, particularly the 1985 G.I. Joe U.S.S. Flag aircraft carrier, are drawing significant interest.

Levin mentioned, “It is nearly complete,” referring to the G.I. Joe aircraft carrier, a nostalgic piece that originally cost $150 in 1985.

Apart from these, retro game consoles and original Ghostbusters toys are also set to hit the auction block, showcasing the diverse range of items available on Factor48.com.

Second Chances for Toys and Business Owner

Much like Levin’s successful pivot after the challenges posed by Covid-19, the toys auctioned on Factor48.com are getting a second chance with collectors. Levin expressed her surprise at the positive turn of events, stating, “I would never have guessed it, but it took a great turn.”

A Lucrative Niche: Beyond Retro Toys

While Factor48.com also handles overstock items and liquidation sales, it is the current retro toy auction that is generating the most interest. The business’s ability to adapt to changing market demands and capitalize on niche opportunities has contributed to its remarkable success.

In conclusion, Factor48.com’s journey from a struggling business during the pandemic to a thriving online auction house serves as an inspiring tale of resilience, adaptability, and entrepreneurial ingenuity.
