TUCSON, Ariz. – In a bid to address the pressing issue of hygiene among the homeless population, Tucson Housing and Community Development has launched a mobile shower initiative. The program, consisting of a Honda-brand generator and a trailer with five bathroom stalls, aims to provide essential hygiene facilities for those in need.
Meeting Basic Needs
The mobile trailer, equipped with toilets, sinks, mirrors, and showers, operates five days a week, catering to individuals who require access to clean and safe hygiene facilities. Each stall allows guests a 15-minute shower session, monitored by a wall-mounted timer to ensure efficient use.
Positive Reception
Armando Moreno, one of the beneficiaries of the program, expressed his satisfaction after his first visit to the mobile trailer. He highlighted the importance of the limited time provided, stating that it was sufficient to fulfill the basic necessity of cleanliness.
The initiative has received positive feedback from the community, with Housing First’s outreach specialist noting that they have established regular users who rely on the service. This demonstrates the tangible impact of the program in meeting the hygiene needs of Tucson’s homeless population.
Community Engagement
The mobile shower trailer rotates its location throughout the week, strategically parking at various points across the city to maximize accessibility. Locations include Caridad Community Kitchen, Primavera Foundation, St. Francis Men’s Shelter, Casa Maria, and Goodwill Rec.
The initiative not only provides essential hygiene services but also fosters a sense of community engagement. Regular users are on a first-name basis with staff, emphasizing the human-centric approach of the program.
