The United States Postal Service (USPS) has declared its commitment to keeping the Tulsa Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) operational while initiating significant operational changes. This decision follows extensive deliberation, including a resolution considered by the Tulsa City Council in April, urging the USPS to prioritize the interests of Tulsa residents.

Investment in Modernization

As part of a broader $40 billion investment strategy aimed at enhancing Postal processing, transportation, and delivery networks nationwide, USPS plans to modernize its Tulsa facility. This modernization effort is a key component of the 10-year Delivering for America (DFA) plan, focusing on improving mailing operations across the country.

The USPS intends to invest up to $22.5 million in transforming the Tulsa LPC into a modernized hub with expanded and streamlined package and mail processing capabilities. This investment aims to bolster the facility’s ability to handle mail and packages efficiently, aligning with evolving postal demands.

Changes in Operations

One significant change entails transferring outgoing mail processing operations from the Tulsa facility to the Oklahoma City P&DC. This strategic move aims to optimize mail flow and distribution, particularly for mail and packages destined outside the Tulsa area.

Despite these operational adjustments, USPS assures that there will be no career layoffs. Any reassignments of career bargaining unit employees and adjustments in pre-career personnel will adhere to collective bargaining agreements, ensuring fair treatment of postal workers during this transition period.

Enhanced Services

Following the facility’s conversion to a Local Processing Center (LPC), it is anticipated to offer a range of services, including mailing and shipping packages, processing manual letters and flats, and providing express services. Additionally, the LPC will facilitate bulk and permit mail handling, catering to the diverse needs of both individuals and businesses in the Tulsa area.
