Working off-duty near her college in Jersey City, Seals made a lasting impression on Laura as she walked to school. Their chance encounters led to dates, marriage, and a family of five children. Laura fondly recalls Seals as not just a dedicated detective but also a gentleman, embodying old-school values by opening doors and prioritizing the safety of his family.

A Dedicated Officer

Detective Joseph Seals served with distinction in the Jersey City Police Narcotics unit, known for his unwavering dedication to duty. His colleague, Anthony Scally, reminisces about Seals’ work ethic, describing him as relentless in his pursuit of justice. Seals strived to make arrests daily, displaying no hint of complacency in his duties.

Tragic Loss

On December 10, 2019, tragedy struck when Detective Seals was fatally shot during a confrontation with suspects in a cemetery while on patrol. The incident, which marked the beginning of a harrowing ordeal, escalated as the suspects proceeded to attack a Kosher grocery store in Jersey City, resulting in the loss of three lives before being neutralized by law enforcement after a standoff.

Support in Times of Grief

The loss of Detective Seals left a profound void in the community and in his family. Laura Seals found solace and support through the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of first responders and military personnel. Frank Siller, chairman, and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, pledged to alleviate the financial burden on the Seals family by covering their mortgage payments.

The Seals 766 Team: A Tribute and a Mission

In the wake of her husband’s tragic death, Laura Seals embarked on a journey of remembrance and resilience. She formed The Seals 766 team, named after Seals’ badge number, and participated in the Tower Climb, scaling 104 stories alongside her son Ethan and colleagues of Detective Seals. The climb symbolized not only a tribute to Seals’ memory but also a mission to support others facing similar challenges.

Anthony Scally and Laura Seals are preparing to participate in the Tower Climb once again, united in their commitment to honor Detective Seals’ legacy.
