LOS ANGELES – USC, in response to previous cancellation of its main stage commencement ceremony amid protests, announced plans to host a Trojan Family Graduate Celebration next week at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The event promises an array of festivities, including drone shows, fireworks, surprise performances, and the iconic Trojan Marching Band. Graduates of the Class of 2024 can anticipate a special gift as part of the celebration, aimed at commemorating their achievements in a grand manner and fostering a sense of unity within the Trojan community.

Turmoil in USC’s Commencement Season

USC’s commencement plans faced disruption in mid-April when the university decided not to allow pro-Palestinian valedictorian Asna Tabassum to speak during the main stage ceremony. This decision, attributed to security concerns following objections to Tabassum’s online remarks, sparked controversy and led to protests on campus.

Despite attempts to address the situation, including scrapping plans for external speakers and ultimately canceling the event, USC encountered challenges in finding an alternative venue for the ceremony.

Challenges in Venue Selection

We know many of you have had questions about why USC couldn’t use the Coliseum for our main stage ceremony, stated the university’s announcement regarding the Graduate Celebration. It was the first place we looked — unfortunately, it was fully booked. We also looked at many alternative arenas around Los Angeles — which on such short notice had similar issues.

The university clarified that the Coliseum had initially been unavailable due to prior bookings. However, through adjustments made by various groups, limited access became feasible for the special event, albeit restricted to a portion of the venue.

Ticketing Details and Access

To manage attendance, USC requires graduating students to reserve tickets for themselves and up to eight named guests. Tickets for the Graduate Celebration, as well as events at other venues such as the Galen Center, Shrine Auditorium, and USC Village Great Lawn, will be provided free of charge.

Graduates can expect to receive detailed information regarding ticketing and other event logistics via email.
