In a bid to revitalize the iconic Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) unveiled a $99 million proposal aimed at enhancing the venue’s infrastructure to attract larger touring shows, stimulate economic growth, and generate employment opportunities within the community.

UTEP President Heather Wilson emphasized the need for an uplift to transform the Sun Bowl into a premier destination for major concerts and events, stating, The Sun Bowl is the only place that can host some of these large shows. Currently underutilized, the stadium requires significant upgrades to accommodate the needs of top-tier acts and draw crowds from across the region.

Infrastructure Enhancements

The Sun Bowl Uplift project encompasses a range of structural improvements, including upgrades to the electrical system to power larger shows, installation of an all-drivable field cover system, and widening of access routes for 18-wheelers essential for major concert tours. Additionally, plans include enhancements to fan amenities such as concessions and restrooms to elevate the overall experience for attendees.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

According to UTEP officials, implementing the proposal could result in a substantial economic boost for El Paso. By hosting eight additional A-list events annually, the region stands to gain an estimated $2.06 billion in tourism spending and retail revenue over 30 years. Moreover, the influx of activity is projected to generate over $82 million in tax revenue and create more than 605 new jobs within the community.

Community Response

The proposal has garnered support from various stakeholders, including Andrea Hutchins, CEO of the El Paso Chamber, who commended UTEP’s commitment to revitalizing the Sun Bowl and diversifying its event offerings. Bernie Olivas, Executive Director of the Sun Bowl Association, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the potential benefits for the city, county, and surrounding community.

Jorge Vazquez, executive director of special events at UTEP, emphasized the need for expansion, drawing parallels with the success of the Don Haskins Center. With only 12,000 seats available at the Don, Vazquez sees the Sun Bowl as a promising opportunity to host larger-scale events and further enrich El Paso’s entertainment landscape.

Historical Significance

Built in 1963, the Sun Bowl Stadium boasts a rich history of hosting renowned musical acts and sporting events, including performances by the likes of the Rolling Stones, Ricky Martin, and RBD. As the second oldest bowl game in the country, the Sun Bowl has become a national icon, captivating audiences across the nation.

Commissioner Carlos Leon expressed optimism regarding the proposal, underscoring its potential to rejuvenate the Sun Bowl and enhance its status as a cultural landmark within the community.
