EL PASO, Texas [KFOX14] — Adolfo Contreras, a migrant from Venezuela, is seizing the opportunities available to him in the United States after a long and arduous journey. Contreras, along with his family, crossed the border into the U.S. at El Paso in June of the previous year, undertaking a challenging five-month trek through Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Mexico before reaching their destination.
Contreras recounted the difficulties of their journey, highlighting Mexico as the most challenging leg. Upon arriving in the U.S., Contreras initially settled in Florida with his brother before eventually relocating back to El Paso. Reflecting on his almost year-long stay, Contreras expressed gratitude for the improved conditions and sense of peace he has found in the U.S., stating, I’ve been here almost a year and it’s gone much better for me, I’ve been at peace, thank God.
Pursuing Better Opportunities
The decision to leave Venezuela stemmed from the dire living conditions and the pursuit of a better life. Securing a job at Bodega Loya in Socorro, Contreras has been employed there for the past eight months, utilizing his social security card and work permit. His responsibilities at the store include various tasks such as planting, weeding, and constructing frames, skills he acquired on the job.
A Testament to Hard Work and Opportunity
Ralph Loya, the owner of Bodega Loya, commended Contreras as an honest and hardworking individual, emphasizing the value of providing opportunities to those willing to work. Loya acknowledged the concerns surrounding migrants but stressed the importance of giving individuals like Contreras a chance to contribute positively to society.
There are a few bad apples that are coming through, Loya stated, hopefully you find somebody that wants to work and that you can trust and they can trust in you and you have work for them to do.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding his asylum case, Contreras remains determined to continue working towards a better future for his family. He expressed confidence that his sacrifices will ultimately lead to a stable and prosperous life for his daughters, underscoring the resilience and optimism of many immigrants in similar circumstances.
I know my daughters are going to have a better future and we’re stable, we’re doing good over here, Contreras affirmed.
