With 217 voting centers spread across San Diego County and nearly two million registered voters, the tallying of election night results is expected to be a prolonged process.
Early Voting and Ballot Handling
The voting centers have been operational since February 24 for early voting. Mail-in ballots are accounted for if they are postmarked on or before Election Day and received by March 12.
After ballots are cast, they undergo a meticulous process to ensure accuracy and integrity.
Reporting Initial Results
The initial batch of official election night results is released shortly after 8 p.m. on Tuesday. This includes mail-in ballots received before Election Day and those cast during early voting between February 24 and March 4.
Following this announcement, updates solely reflect the number of ballots from voting centers.
Transporting Ballots to Registrar’s Office
Once voting centers close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, poll workers commence the task of packing and transporting the remaining ballots from each center across the county to the Registrar’s office. Updates on the counting process continue throughout the night until all ballots from voting centers are reported.
Provisional Voting
Individuals who missed the February 20 registration deadline can conditionally register and vote provisionally up to and on Election Day. Their provisional ballots are counted upon validation by the Registrar’s office.
Subsequent Result Releases
Additional batches of unofficial election night results are scheduled to be posted by 5 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday following Election Day, and by 5 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of the subsequent week.
Further updates will be provided at the Registrar of Voters’ discretion. The election results attain official status upon certification, expected by April 4.
