ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Wegmans, a popular grocery chain in New York, plans to close select stores for half an hour during April’s solar eclipse, allowing employees to witness the rare event firsthand.
Embracing the Celestial Event
Patrick Bourcy, a Wegmans regional manager, stated that the decision to close stores temporarily is to ensure employees have the opportunity to experience the total solar eclipse, emphasizing the significance of the celestial occurrence.
Store Closures
Wegmans will close 48 stores in New York state, including locations in Rochester, Buffalo, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, and Syracuse, between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on April 8, aligning with the eclipse’s timing.
Eclipse Path and Timing
The 2024 solar eclipse’s path of totality spans from southern Texas to northern Maine, with significant cities like Buffalo and Rochester falling within its trajectory. The farther away from this path, the less sun will appear blocked.
Eclipse Viewing Details
Southern Texas will witness totality first, followed by cities like Dallas, Indianapolis, Buffalo, and northern Maine. The eclipse event will commence approximately an hour before the peak of totality, gradually blocking more of the sun’s rays.
