A 36-year-old woman was apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers on Tuesday for trying to smuggle live parrots through the U.S.-Mexico Border, as per a release from CBP on Friday.

Around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, CBP officers encountered the woman as she was driving a 2007 pickup truck into the U.S. from Mexico.

Smuggling Attempt Discovered

Upon a brief inspection of the vehicle, authorities found five parrots concealed in a gap between two stacked five-gallon buckets in the truck bed. The driver and the vehicle were then referred for further inspection.

The driver was detained for suspicion of smuggling, and subsequently turned over to Homeland Security Investigations and Fish and Wildlife Services.

Parrots Under Quarantine

Meanwhile, CBP stated that the parrots were placed under quarantine in a secure area. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Veterinary Services will conduct inspections to ensure they are free from any avian diseases.

CBP emphasized that the importation of pets and wildlife is subject to various regulations, including state or municipality veterinary health regulations, as well as federal quarantine, agriculture, wildlife, and customs requirements.
