Gayle Riedy’s harrowing experience unfolded in April 2023 when she faced a medical emergency while driving in Erie County, Ohio. The incident led to a crash that left her stranded and fearing for her life.
A Terrifying Ordeal
I thought that I was going to die, Riedy recounted, reflecting on her ordeal. Trapped inside her vehicle for over 10 hours in a swampy area in Bay View, her situation seemed dire.
Dispatchers’ Determination
Unbeknownst to Riedy, her family had reported her missing to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center. Dispatchers, including Jordan Vanichek, Haley Rankins, and Miranda Cox, collaborated with her cell phone company to locate her using her phone signal.
A Lifesaving Call
Riedy’s prayers were answered when she heard her phone ring. And that was when I knew I wasn’t going to die. And that someone was paying attention, she recalled. However, getting her exact location proved challenging.
Resourceful Response
To pinpoint her location accurately, dispatchers had to guide Riedy to call back on 9-1-1. With their guidance, she used Siri to make the call, enabling the dispatchers to confirm her location.
Relief and Gratitude
It was definitely one of the best calls I have ever received, Vanichek remarked. Riedy expressed her immense gratitude, stating, I knew I was saved.
Successful Rescue Effort
Shortly after the call, Erie County deputies located Riedy, cold and bruised. She was promptly taken to the hospital and eventually made a full recovery.

Riedy recently had the opportunity to meet the dispatchers who played a pivotal role in her rescue. Thank you so much for your persistence, I mean it, she expressed, grateful for their unwavering determination.
